"I was drawn to UC Santa Barbara for several reasons. First, the laboratory facilities for the type of research I wanted to do in my Ph.D. are some of the best in the world. Second, the other graduate students I met during my visit weekend were fantastic. They were friendly, smart, driven, and knew how to both work hard and play hard. Third, I knew if I came to UCSB I would have the opportunity to shape my Ph.D. experience in exactly the way I wanted.
One of the most spectacular things about the Earth Science department here at UCSB is the variety of opportunities that are offered to the graduate students. For me, the opportunity to teach – and I mean really teach, not as a TA, but as the instructor – has been a complete game changer. I always knew I wanted to be a professor, but being able to teach an introductory-level geology course as a Ph.D. student really solidified that for me. I am really motivated by my students. I have always been so impressed by the undergraduates in the Earth Science Department here at UCSB. They are among the smartest, most hard-working students I have ever taught. I can only hope that my interactions with my students can be as life-changing for them as my own were for me."
