"What drew me to choose UC Santa Barbara for my graduate studies was the interdisciplinary work the Spanish and Portuguese Department offers. The Department offers optional emphases on Translation Studies, Feminist Studies, Medieval Studies, and Applied Linguistics, which enables you to take courses in other departments and collaborate with other faculty and graduate students. I would recommend that future grad students in my department get involved in university service. My department organizes annual conferences like our Hispanic and Lusophone Conference and we have our own publishing journal Tinta run by graduate students. I want to encourage future grad students to join these service committees if they are interested in organizing, publishing, or want to collaborate as editors. Also, UCSB offers many opportunities to serve as student mentors within and outside our campus community. Mentoring students has been one of the most fulfilling experiences during my time at UC Santa Barbara."
