Art History Graduate Degree Program

Description
The Department of History of Art and Architecture prepares students for graduate work leading to careers as academic historians of art, museum curators, or critics, and in other fields such as art administration, historic preservation, and gallery work. The Department offers degrees in all periods and media of Western art from Ancient to Contemporary, as well as the following non-Western fields: African, Chinese, Islamic, Oceanic, and Pre-Columbian. The majority of faculty have extensive museum experience, as well as strong interests in field research and theory. The Department has particular strengths in architectural history, art of the Americas, and theory. But, in fact, the Department has historically encouraged the faculty to teach and research in diverse areas, so that unusual vigor in many other areas has emerged: British, Northern European, Medieval, Photography, and Colonial Latin America, to name only a few. The program is supported by an excellent Arts Library, Visual Resources Collection, Architectural Drawing Collection, and University Art Museum.
