French Graduate Degree Program

Description
The French doctoral program seeks to advance students' understanding of the literature and culture of the French and Francophone worlds, to acquaint students with major developments in criticism, theory, aesthetics, and cultural studies, to emphasize and foster interdisciplinary approaches that stimulate critical thinking about interpretation, literary history, and historiography, and to prepare students for the challenges of diverse and changing job market. As part of their pedagogical training, our Teaching Assistants study second language acquisition and also practice interdisciplinary approaches to teaching French in the Humanities and General Education curricula. The graduate program in French offers the M.A. and the Ph.D. in French literature. The Ph.D. program has optional emphases in European Medieval Studies, Applied Linguistics, and Women's Studies. The Department has two exchange programs, with the University of Bordeaux and the University of Paris, and students who have completed the M.A. are eligible to apply. The department collaborates with the Comparative Literature Program, The Consortium for Literature, Theory and Culture, the Film and Media Studies Department, the Medieval Studies Program, and the Renaissance Studies Program.
